With access mostly restricted until 1992, Mustang is the region hidden behind the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna Massifs. Cold and arid but pristine and ancient, much of Mustang has remained as it was hundreds of years ago. Trekking routes go through the Lo Kingdom ("Upper Mustang") and along the Annapurna Circuit in lower Mustang, the district is famous for the village of Muktinath (a popular Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage site), apples, and Marpha brandy. Mustang was a lost kingdom of Tibet and today traditions have survived here for centuries.
The unique preserved Tibetan culture in the upper half, with the Thakali people and their villages in the lower half, Mustang is an escape from the rest of Nepal. Ideally uncrowded and a different style of trekking than that of Everest or Annapurna, Mustang offers wonderful and peaceful treks through the most remote ancient towns of the Himalayas.
