Hidden away in the remote valley of the Makalu- Barun National Park, Mera Peak (6476m) is the highest trekking peak in Nepal. Five of the 8,000m peaks are visible from the summit, which includes Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Makalu and Kanchenjunga. Although the trek starts from Lukla, this adventure takes you off the beaten path, apart from the well-trodden routes to the popular Everest region treks.
Previous mountaineering experience is not required, although it is a challenging trek due to the terrain and high altitude. The trek is best suited for those with moderate mountaineering experience. Late spring (late April - May) and autumn (late September-November) are the best times to climb Mera Peak, and the view from the summit are some of the most rewarding mountain views.

International Departure
Day 1 | International arrival in Tribhuvan Airport, Kathmandu
Welcome to Nepal! A representative from Trans Himalayan Tour will pick you up from the airport and take you to your hotel in Kathmandu. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Day 2 | Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla, trek to Chutanga: 35min flight, 4 hrs trek. Ending Elevation: 3050m
The flight into Lukla is spectacular and the airport is situated amongst the hills at an altitude of 2860m. The landing at Lukla airport is an exhilarating beginning to the trek, with the runway being 520m long and 30m wide, along with an incline of 12 degrees.
From Lukla we will walk a mostly uphill trail through pine and rhododendron forests to reach Chutanga, where we will rest for the night. Although the lodges in Mera Peak route are a bit more basic than the standard Everest region lodges, we will be using lodges throughout the trek except for Mera High Camp, where you will be sleeping in tents.
Day 3 | Chhutanga to Thuli Kharka via Zatrawa Pass (4610m): 6-7 hrs. Ending Elevation: 3900m
Today you will begin the day by trekking mainly uphill to cross over the Zatrawa Pass where you can enjoy the spectacular views of Numbur Himal, Kongdi Ri and Karyolung Peak among other peaks. After crossing the pass, it is a downhill trail to reach Thuli Kharka. The views across the Dudh Kosi river towards Karyolung and the rolling foothills of the Hinku Valley are truly impressive.
Day 4 | Thuli Kharka to Kothe: 5-6 hrs. Ending Elevation: 4095m
Passing through thick forests on a zig zag trail to reach Kothe, we will be rewarded with beautiful views of the Hinku valley and the surrounding peaks such as Peak 43 and Kusum Khangru. We trek through juniper, pine, rhododendron and other vegetation of the Nepal Himalayas to reach the village of Kothe.
Day 5 | Kothe to Thangnak: 4-5 hrs. Ending Elevation: 4350m
Walking along the riverside of Hinku Khola through an uphill trail, today is a shorter trek than our previous days. We continue to trek up the Hinku valley and as the vegetation becomes sparser after 4000m, we still have the fantastic view of the south face of Mera peak to enjoy. As these grazing areas have been used by yak herders for many years, you may run into some of them along the way. We will also pass through a 200 year old Gompa where you can offer incense and pray for a successful summit of Mera Peak.
Day 6 | Acclimatization day in Thangnak
Today we will take an acclimatization hike to the beautiful moraine-dammed Sabal Tsho Lake (3-4hrs round trip), to an altitude of almost 5000m. After the hike, you can enjoy the settlement of Thangnak, which is a summer grazing area for yaks and a great place to rest and acclimatize.
Day 7 | Thangnak to Khare: 4-5 hrs. Ending Elevation: 5045m
Today the trail climbs through glacier moraines of Dig Glacier and Hinku Nup glacier for a few hours and then climbs steeply to our resting place in Khare. You can enjoy the views of the north face of Mera Peak, Charpate Himal and also venture on some hikes around Khare.
Day 8 | Preparation Day in Khare
Today will be spent training for the peak climb and acclimatizing. Sorting through climbing gear and practicing using crampons, ice axe, jumars and abseiling, we will keep on practicing until you feel comfortable with the basic climbing techniques. After training, you can take the rest of the day to enjoy the amazing mountain setting and rest up for the big day.
Day 9 | Khare to Mera Peak Base Camp: 3-4 hrs. Ending Elevation 5350m
We will start the day by walking across the glaciers and boulder-strewn paths for around 2-3 hours to reach Mera Peak Base Camp (5350m). It is a steep uphill and we must pay extra attention to our foot placements. The rocky trail can be challenging especially if it has recently snowed. You can also use the rest of the day to hone your climbing skills. For Mera Peak Base Camp and High Camp, your accommodation will be in tents and the meals will be fixed.
Day 10 | Mera Peak Base Camp to Mera Peak High Camp: 4-5 hrs. Ending Elevation: 5780m
Once we leave the base camp, we will climb up to Mera La (5400m) and we will walk between glacier and moraine to reach Mera Peak High Camp. You will be rewarded with excellent views of f Mt. Everest, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and the High Camp is surrounded by glaciers and hidden behind big rocks. This camp is located at an excellent view point and offers panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayas.
Day 11 | Mera High Camp to Summit (6461m) and back to Khare: 9-10 hrs. Ending Elevation: 5045m
Today is the day for the Mera Peak Summit! It is going to be a long day where we wake up around 2am in the morning, have some breakfast and start the gradual trek towards the summit, which takes around 5-6 hrs. As the first rays of sun starts to hit the peaks in a golden red, we will be walking up the glacier. The climb is non-technical to start off with but in the final push for the summit, it requires a lot of effort and fixed ropes. Your climbing Sherpa will be with you at all times and you will be thankful for the training done in Khare.
From the summit, we take in spectacular views of the mighty Himalayas including Mt. Everest (8848m), Cho-Oyu (8210m), Lhotse (8516m), Makalu (8463m), Kangchenjunga (8586m), Nuptse (7855m), Chamlang (7319m), Baruntse (7 129m) and many other Himalayan peaks. It is one of the most rewarding views to behold and you will remember this day for many years to come. Be sure to conserve some energy as after the summit, we retrace our steps back to High Camp where we will rest with some hot tea and soups and then descend down to Khare for the night.
Day 12 | Reserve Day for Contingency
As we all know the weather in the Himalayas can change in a blink of an eye, it is best to have one extra day on the trek for contingency. If we do not have good weather on our planned summit day or any other unanticipated problem, this day can be used as a contingency. If the summit goes as planned, this day will not be required.
Day 13 | Khare to Kothe: 5-6 hrs. Ending Elevation: 4095m
After the rewarding climb to Mera Peak, we will walk down the Hinku valley and retrace our steps back to Kothe. Here you can celebrate your success by enjoying the local cuisines with your team and relax for the night.
Day 14 | Kothe to Thuli Kharka: 5-6 hrs. Ending Elevation: 3900m
We begin our hike down to Thuli Kharka after breakfast and pass by chortens and several tributaries of the Inkhu Khola. Walking past lush rhododendron forests through uphill and downhill trails, you will reach Thuli Kharka and rest for the night.
Day 15 | Thuli Kharka to Lukla via Zatarawa Pass: 7-8 hrs. Ending Elevation: 2860m
It takes around two hours to reach Zatarawa Pass from Thuli Kharka and after crossing the pass, you will descend into the Dudh Kosi valley and into Lukla, the gateway to Everest. The beautiful valley opens up to the mountainous views of Cho Yu, Khonde, Numbur Himal and Kusum Khangru, and once you reach Lukla village, we conclude the trekking for this trip. You can enjoy the last dinner with your guides and porters and start thinking about your next epic trek!
Day 16 | Lukla to Kathmandu
After another short domestic flight from Lukla to Kathmandu, we bring you back to the city that started your journey. The day can be arranged for some sight-seeing around the famous World Heritage sights in Kathmandu, highly recommended are Patan Dubar Square, Boudhanath stupa and Swayambhunath temple (monkey temple). Overnight in Kathmandu.
