“With the hope of being able to explain why I have dedicated my life’s work to tourism development in Nepal, I would like to embark on my story that started in Nepal in the spring of 1962. I first came to Nepal with a Japanese climbing expedition to summit Mukut Himal (6665m) in 1962. The few weeks spent in the mountains made me irresistibly attracted to the Himalayas and the kindness of the Nepalese people. I wanted to do something for the people in Nepal and for the next three years, I tried many avenues to be able to live in this country that had mesmerized me. In the end, I resorted to quitting my job in Japan in 1966 and heading to Nepal without any prospective job. With the help of my Nepali friends, I was able to secure a two year contract at the Department of Cottage and Small Industries. I worked on projects such as rice polishing equipment, vegetable oil extraction, plastic molding and even tofu making. However I felt that it would be difficult to set up small industries in a country like Nepal, especially with cheap imports flowing in.
I began to think about Nepal having the potential to be a world class tourist destination. When I visited the Everest region for the first time in 1968, I was in awe of the magnificent Himalayas. I started to wonder about the possibility of building a hotel there. When discussing this matter with a doctor from New Zealand who was working at Sir Edmund Hilary’s Khunde Hospital, he mentioned that he knew just the right spot. When I was able to see the view from that ridge in Syangboche with the Everest range spread all around me, I knew that this was where I would build the hotel.
From the onset, it was important to me that I received approval from the local villagers of Namche Bazaar and Khumjung, as my goal was also to be able to bring more jobs and opportunities to the local communities. At the time we began working on Hotel Everest View, there was not a single lodge from Lukla to Namche Bazaar.
Being a mechanical engineer by profession, I was an amateur in the tourism industry. It was with the generous support of my friends and the government of Nepal, that I was able to build Hotel Everest View and the Syangboche airstrip nearby. The hotel was built by two carpenters from Nagano, thirty local stonemasons, ten carpenters from Kathmandu and fifty villagers. The construction of the Syangboche airstrip at times had a total workforce of more than 200 people. In addition, fifty porters carrying construction materials and food were constantly traveling back and forth between Kathmandu and Syangboche, a route that took a month round trip. There are no words for the strength of these porters who carried everything from dynamite to parts of a bulldozer for the airstrip construction.
Hotel Everest View’s walls have around 25,000 pieces of hand chiseled high-quality white stone, and completing the hotel and the airstrip took around 200,000 hours of labor. Even without any advice on the working hours, everyone was working until it was so dark that they could not see their hands in front of their faces. All were united in their fervor to accomplish what had never been done before.
In order to promote tourism and to manage the requirements of the visitors to Nepal, I founded Trans Himalayan Tour Pvt. Ltd. (THT) as a tour company based in Kathmandu in 1968. Our main client base were Japanese trekkers and THT was also a local ticket agent for Japan Airlines when it was still flying into Kathmandu. Along with our Tokyo office, we became responsible for marketing Nepal Airlines in Japan and organized the chartered flights from Nagoya to Kathmandu in the late 1980s. THT continues to provide the level of excellent service that has come to be expected of its staff on ground and on the trails with clients.
With Kathmandu not only being the nation’s capital but also the location of the only international airport, I felt that we needed to have a hotel based in Kathmandu as well. This was the reason for building the four star Hotel Himalaya in Lalitpur, Patan. This hotel was completed in 1987 with the investment from Mitsui Fudosan. The Japanese real estate company Mitsui Fudosan became the first foreign company (besides India) to invest in Nepal’s tourism industry. This was viewed as a pioneering effort in the Japanese corporate world. I took on the responsibility of the construction and later helped run the hotel in the capacity of a General Manager until 2004. Nepal’s tourism potential cannot be complete without mentioning the scenic city of Pokhara. I had plans to build a world class hotel in Pokhara for the past 40 years, and I was able to realize this dream with the investment from another Japanese company.
We are working to make this resort hotel in Sarangkot, which is named Hotel Annapurna View, Sarangkot, as one of the defining features of Pokhara. We hope that the hotel will also lead to economic benefit for the locals through job creation and agricultural production. Reflecting over the fifty years spent in Nepal, I have often wondered what motivated me to build the three hotels. My answer is simply that I would like to inspire our visitors and contribute to the development of Nepal’s tourism industry. With this, I hope to have motivated you to visit this magnificent country where you can shape your own adventure.”

Message from Sonia Miyahara (Sales and Marketing Director)
“Born and raised in Kathmandu, Nepal, I have often viewed myself as being fortunate to grow up in a culture that values centuries-old traditions, family ties, and a simple way of life. My mother is a Nepali and the eldest of seven sisters. I grew up surrounded by family, fifteen cousins and countless festivals and celebrations. My father (Takashi Miyahara) being a foreigner, it was initially difficult for my grandparents to agree to my parent’s marriage, but later they were truly happy of the work he has done to help develop Nepal.
My father often quotes ‘the apple does not fall very far from the tree’ (in his example he is referring to himself as his mother used to run a hot springs inn in Nagano, Japan). Perhaps there is some truth in this. Watching him take care of guests, inviting them to our home for meals, making sure they are comfortable and even cooking food to take to the hospital himself if a guest fell sick, I have come to internalize these values as well. My greatest reward is seeing the happy faces of our guests after their trip and being able to provide employment to our guides, porters and staff.
In regards to my education, I went to an American International School (Lincoln School) in Kathmandu, Nepal until high school, after which I attended Brandeis University in Massachusetts, USA (major: Economics, minor: International Business & East Asian Studies) and I did my Masters from London School of Economics (MSc in Politics of the World Economy) in the UK. I then worked in a British based financial information services company in Tokyo and Singapore for seven years. After gaining experience in a multinational company, I was confident that I could come back home and work towards promoting Nepal in the international market.
For me, understanding the passion through which Hotel Everest View and Trans Himalayan Tour were built, it has been a privilege to be able to help manage and promote these companies as well as Nepal in general. I am fully committed to the legacy of delivering excellence in the Himalayas. Our goal is for our guests to go back home with big smiles and full hearts.”
