Day 02 | Kathmandu – Pokhara – Nayapul – Tirkhedhunga: Driving Time: 1.5 hour, Trekking Time: 4/5 hours. Ending Elevation: 1540m
Pokhara is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Nepal. It is set in the spectacular backdrop of the snowy peaks of the Annapurna massif, and surrounded by serene lakes. Today your journey starts from Kathmandu to Pokhara via domestic flight, and then on to Nayapul via private bus/jeep from Pokhara airport. It is approximately 1.5 hours bumpy ride to Nayapul and your trek to Tirkhedhunga starts from here. After a 30 minute walk, you will arrive in Birethanti, a picturesque village with many teahouses where you can stop for lunch. The cleanliness of the lodges along the route are commendable and after a few hours of gradual uphill, you will reach your destination for the night. Although the Himalayas are not in view this day, the hilly region of Kaski district makes for a beautiful setting where the houses are adorned with flowers and flowering vines.
Day 03: Tirkhedhunga to Ghorepani: Trekking Time: 7/8 hours. Ending Elevation: 2870m
After a hearty breakfast, you will be making your way to the Magar village of Ulleri (2070m), which is a 1.5 uphill from Tirkhedhunga. The steps are well laid out which makes for a comfortable hike and there are tea shops along the way selling refreshments and fruits. The trek today is an altitude gain of over 1300m which means that most of today is spent going uphill. This path is accompanied by breathtaking views of Machhapuchhare (6993m), Hiuchuli (6441m), and the grand Annapurna south (7219m). Annapurna South comes into view from between the hills and after a sumptuous lunch at Banthanti, it is a picturesque walk through dense rhododendron forests and moss covered trees. During the spring time when the rhododendrons are in full bloom, the hills are also covered with these trees and it makes for the most beautiful pictures with the backdrop of the Himalayas.
Once you reach Ghorepani, it is recommend that you stay in Upper Ghorepani for the great views and more importantly, to make the hike next day to Poon Hill slightly easier. Make sure you have water bottles as there is a very good initiative to ban plastic mineral bottles but it is possible to refill your water bottles with filtered water at the lodges.
Day 04: Ghorepani to Poonhill (3210m) to Tadapani: Trekking Time: 6/7 hours. Ending Elevation: 2650m
An early morning hike to Poon Hill (3210m) offers you the sunrise view over Mt. The hike up takes around 45 minute and you would be starting the trek in the dark to make it to the top in time for the sunrise. In the winter months the frost on the path glistens in the headlights and you can see the dawn breaking through the east. The morning sun starts to strike Annapurna South, the Dhaulagiri range and Machhapuchhare. The view of the mountains all around and the beauty of the sunrise makes it a captivating moment. After basking in the glory of the sunrise, you will head back to the lodge in Ghorepani for breakfast and get ready for the hike to Tadapani.
After about an hour uphill to Thapla Danda (3165m), the view of the Himalayas and the valley in front of it is mesmerizing and makes for another amazing photo spot. Once crossing Thapla Danda, it is an enjoyable walk through the green forests and after a few hours of downhill and uphill, you will reach the beautiful village of Tadapani. On the way you may be able to see some grey langur monkeys playing in the branches. If the weather is clear, you will be rewarded by another beautiful sunset with the snow-capped mountains reflecting an orange glow.
Day 05: Tadapani to Ghandruk to Pokhara: Trekking Time: 2.5 hours Jeep Ride: 2 hours. Ending Elevation: 1400m
Today, the trail descends through forests to the Gurung village of Ghandruk. You may come across some trekkers who are going uphill while you are going downhill, as they may be trekking towards Ghorepani after their Annapurna Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit trek. After having lunch in the pretty village of Ghandruk with its slated roof houses, you will onboard a jeep to get to Pokhara. The jeep ride is around 2 hours on a dusty road and from Nayapul, it is the same route which you came on Day 2.
