For day trips slightly further out than the center of Kathmandu, venture to the magnificent Bhaktapur Dubar Square and the historic Changu Narayan Temple with stone inscription dating back to 464 AD.
With so much to explore and with these sights taking almost an hour to reach from central Kathmandu, we have recommended just two locations for this day trip.
9:30 am: Changu Narayan – The Ancient Temple
Changu Narayan is a historic temple in the valley, housing the oldest stone inscription dating from AD 464 (built during the Licchavi period in Nepal). Located on the north of Bhaktapur, the serene two storied pagoda style temple complex provides great displays of Licchavi period carvings and statues.
Changu Narayan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and although the temple suffered some damage after the 2015 earthquake, it is now open for visitors.
12:30 pm: Bhaktapur: The City of Devotees
Bhaktapur is often said to be the most-well preserved out of the three main medieval cities in the valley. Known as ‘The city of Devotees’, this UNESCO World Heritage site is built around narrow pedestrian walkways while wood and the scarlet hue of bricks dominate the townscape. During the reign of King Bhupatindra Malla, the builder-king brought architectural marvels to the ancient city with additions such as the five-storied Nyatapola temple (tallest temple in Nepal), and the beautiful wood carvings in the royal palace of 55 windows. Spending time in Bhaktapur admiring the stunning architecture, the traditional crafts of pottery in a display, the locals going about their daily life, is definitely a worthwhile excursion.
