Start the day by visiting the beautifully well-preserved palace square of Patan Durbar Square, then head to one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage site of Pashupatinath temple and end the day with the afternoon at the ‘Great Stupa’ of Boudhanath.
10 am: Visit Patan Durbar Square - The City of Beauty
Once the capital of a powerful independent city-state, Patan still maintains a defiantly distinct identity. Patan was and still is the bohemian Nepali town: the residents appreciate the finer things of life, which perhaps explains the area’s other name, Lalitpur (‘City of Beauty’). Patan produces much of Nepal’s fine crafts work, metallurgy and extraordinarily lavish temples. Doorways guarded by stone lions are a particular feature of Patan. You can get wonderful souvenirs at fair trade prices and enjoy the local Newari cuisine or the numerous high quality restaurants.
There has been some damage after the 2015 earthquake but Patan still holds the finest collection of temples and artifacts in all of Nepal and is well on its way to rebuilding.
2 pm: Pashupatinath - The Hindu Powerhouse of Spirituality
Located 5km east of central Kathmandu and just beyond the Ring Road, is Pashupatinath temple. It is a sacred crossroad and is one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites in Asia. You will find yourself amongst sights of smoky shrines, stirring melee of temples, cremation areas, pilgrims, monkeys and half-naked holy men.
Take a moment to absorb all that is going on in the vicinity of Pashupatinath, a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
3:30 pm: Visit Boudhanath - The ‘Great Stupa’ in Kathmandu
The great white stupa at Boudha is on the northeast side of central Kathmandu. Around this area is a large Buddhist community, thriving next to one of the world’s largest stupas, also known as Chorten Chempo (the ‘Great Stupa’), which is the most important Tibetan Buddhist monument outside of Tibet.
Boudhanath is a place like no other, with the soothing sounds of om mani padme hum drifting from the shop houses, maroon clad monks and devotees circling the great white stupa, and a feeling of peace prevails even amidst the crowd. It is a great place to visit especially in the late afternoon when the people start getting ready for their evening prayers.
